SNS Nerve Stimulators

Sacral neuromodulation (SNS) uses a small implanted device to deliver mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerves, which regulate bladder and bowel function. When medications fail to control overactive bladder, urge incontinence, or urinary retention, SNS offers long-term, adjustable relief. Dr. Hamoui implants both the Medtronic InterStim and Axonics systems.

How It Works

  • Lead placed near the S3 sacral nerve; neurostimulator implanted under the skin
  • Gentle electrical pulses modulate abnormal bladder nerve signals
  • Trial phase (1–2 weeks, external device) confirms benefit before permanent implant
  • Settings adjusted wirelessly via remote or smartphone app
  • Fully reversible — device can be removed if needed

Who Is a Candidate

  • OAB with urge incontinence not controlled by medications
  • Non-obstructive urinary retention
  • Urgency/frequency significantly impacting daily life
  • Failed or cannot tolerate anticholinergic or beta-3 agonist medications
  • Fecal urgency or incontinence (strong clinical evidence)

Medtronic InterStim vs. Axonics

  • InterStim Micro — rechargeable, 15-year battery; 1.5T full-body / 3T head MRI compatible
  • Axonics — rechargeable, 15+ year battery; full-body 3T MRI; smaller profile
  • Equivalent clinical outcomes; choice based on anatomy and preference
  • Permanent implant is outpatient; same-day discharge
  • Long-term success rates 75–85% in appropriately selected patients
